Ham Steak with Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Ham Steak with Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Ham and sweet potatoes are the epitome of a Southern Sunday dinner, but because ham steaks are already fully cooked and sweet potatoes cook quickly, you can have the graceful meal any night of the week.

Since the ham needs only a quick sear, rub it with mustard and spices for a flavor punch. While the sweet potatoes boil, combine butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Mash the mixture into the hot potatoes for the taste of candied sweet potatoes without the work. Finally, since both of these items are so easy, put down the can of cream-style corn and make true homestyle creamed corn. The canned version just doesn’t compare!

Test Kitchen Tip

If you can’t find one large bone-in ham steak, two smaller ones will also work.

Instructions

For the sweet potatoes, boil sweet potatoes in a pot of salted water until fork-tender, 1015 minutes; drain.

Combine butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon; add to drained sweet potatoes and crush with a potato masher to desired consistency. Season sweet potatoes with salt and pepper.

For the ham steak, combine garlic powder, onion powder, and ½ tsp. pepper. Brush both sides of ham with mustard, then rub spice mixture onto both sides of ham. Sear ham in a large cast-iron skillet over high heat, 12 minutes per side. Divide ham into 4 portions and serve with sweet potatoes.

Add the brown sugar butter directly to the sweet potatoes and mash. The butter will melt as you do so.

A thin layer of mustard adds flavor to the ham, while also helping the rub adhere to the ham.

To avoid drying it out, only cook the ham steak long enough to sear it for color and extra flavor.
