Cutting into a rock-hard squash can be difficult and even dangerous. Use the microwave to soften it just enough to make cutting easier and safer. First, pierce the squash all over with a paring knife, going about 1" deep. Then microwave the squash on high power for three minutes (any longer and it will start to cook). Remove the squash with a kitchen towel (it’s hot!) and cut it in half.
