Test Kitchen Tip

Get creative when it comes to the cookies in this mix — nearly any flavor works. But, when it comes to texture, you’re going to want a crisp cookie. The reason? Soft cookies crumble with repeated stirring of the mix and caramel. Crisp cookies hold up well. Bite-sized sandwich cookies offer plenty of flavor options, but the Test Kitchen favorite was Pepperidge Farm Chesapeake cookies. Broken into smaller pieces, they make every handful a perfect bite.

Instructions

Preheat oven to 275°.

Cook bacon until crisp in a sauté pan and transfer to a paper-towel-lined plate; reserve drippings.

Combine pretzels and bacon in a large bowl.

Boil drippings, brown sugar, golden syrup, cinnamon, and cayenne in same pan over medium heat, 2 minutes. Pour caramel over pretzel mix and toss until well coated, then stir in cookies. Transfer mix to a nonstick roasting pan and bake 30 minutes, stirring twice.

Coat a large piece of foil with butter. Pour mix onto foil and spread into a single layer to cool. Once cool, break pieces apart if necessary and toss with chocolate and sea salt. Store mix in an airtight container.
