To remove the woody root end of asparagus, hold the end between your thumb and forefinger and bend. It will snap where the woody part ends and the juicy part begins.


Preheat grill to medium-high Brush grill grate with oil.

Toss asparagus with oil, salt, and pepper. Arrange asparagus crosswise on grill grate; grill, covered, turning often, until tender, 34 minutes.

Remove asparagus from grill and toss with zest and cheese.
