Ingredients

FOR THE FRENCH TOAST, WHISK—

FOR THE STREUSEL, COMBINE—

FOR THE SYRUP, SIMMER—

Stale baguettes are essential—they’ll soak up the custard without turning soggy. Cut them, then air-dry a few hours.

Instructions

Coat a 9x13-inch glass or ceramic baking dish with nonstick spray.

_For_ the French toast, whisk eggs, milk, half-and-half, 1/2 cup sugar, vanilla, and nutmeg for the French toast in a large bowl.

Toss baguette pieces in egg mixture and let stand 5 minutes to absorb some of the custard. Arrange baguette pieces in the prepared baking dish, flat side down. Pour residual custard over bread. Cover with plastic and refrigerate for 2 to 24 hours.

Preheat oven to 375°.

_For_ the streusel, combine flour, 1/4 cup sugar, salt, butter, sliced almonds, and almond extract in a bowl, then sprinkle over baguettes. Bake until topping is golden and bread is set, about 30 minutes.

_For_ the syrup, simmer preserves and syrup together in a saucepan over medium-low heat until preserves melt; stir in lemon juice. Serve warm with French toast.

Just before baking, prepare the streusel mixture and sprinkle evenly over the French toast.
