What goes better with breaded, fried chicken than flaky, buttery biscuits? Here, both the chicken and biscuits are laced with garlic powder for a little extra oomph that makes them even more compatible.

Preheat oven to 425°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly coat with nonstick spray.

Whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, ½ tsp. salt, baking soda, and ½ tsp. garlic powder in a bowl. Cut in 6 Tbsp. butter with a pastry blender until pieces are pea-sized; stir in Cheddar.

Add buttermilk and stir until a dough forms; knead on a floured surface until it holds together, then pat into a ½-inch-thick circle. Cut out biscuits with a floured 2¼-inch-round cutter; arrange on prepared baking sheet and bake until golden, 1315 minutes. During last few minutes of baking, brush tops of biscuits with melted butter mixture.
