Pretzel Muffins with Chocolate Chips

Into sweet and salty? Grab one of these muffins quick! With ground and broken pretzels in the batter and a pretzel streusel on top, they’re a salty breakfast treat, which perfectly complements the sweet, buttery streusel and the chocolate chips inside the muffins. And if you love the chunky salt that adorns big, chewy pretzels, you’re in luck — it makes an appearance on these muffin tops, too!

Instructions

Preheat oven to 400°. Line a 12-cup muffin pan with liners; coat with nonstick spray.

For the streusel, combine flour, sugar, ground pretzels, broken pretzels, and cinnamon. Stir butter into dry mixture, cover, and chill.

For the muffins, whisk together flour, ground pretzels, chocolate chips, baking powder, table salt, and cinnamon.

Whisk together milk and sugar until sugar dissolves. Add eggs, oil, butter, and vanilla; stir into flour mixture. Let batter sit 2 minutes, then divide among muffin cups.

Squeeze streusel into clumps; top muffins with it and sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake muffins until a toothpick inserted in centers comes out clean, 1719 minutes; let muffins cool in pan 10 minutes.

Grind the pretzels until very small pieces remain. If they’re too fine, the muffins will be heavy and dry.

Squeeze chilled streusel together with your fingers to get dice-sized pieces to top the muffins with.
