Apple-Potato Mash

If you've never put apples in your mashed potatoes, now is the time to try it out. Cooking a Granny Smith apple with potatoes creates an appetizing side dish to serve with a stew.

Boil potatoes and apple in a pot of salted water until tender, about 15 minutes; drain. Return potatoes to pot over medium heat to dry, 1 minute. Remove pot from heat; add half-and-half and butter.

Mash mixture with a potato masher, then season with salt, white pepper, and nutmeg. Serve potatoes immediately or cover and keep warm. Garnish with diced apple, if desired.
